Where Should I Live? How Astrocartography Helps You Find Your Place

Astrologer Kristina Kamalova studying an astrocartography map

Introduction

Some cities feel like home immediately. Others stay heavy, even after years, even when everything looks right on paper. If you have ever asked yourself "where should I live?", astrocartography offers a way to look at that question through your own birth chart.

I moved to Paris in 2019 for my studies and because I fell in love with the city, long before I knew anything about astrocartography. It wasn't a logical decision, but it felt right and made me happy.

Years later, when I opened my map for the first time, I found my Jupiter DC line running straight through the city. Jupiter is the planet of growth, luck and expansion, here especially through partnerships, and Paris is where my life opened up. The map put words to something I had already lived.

I have lived on eight different planetary lines across several countries. In this article I'll show you how astrocartography works, what each planet line brings, and how to check a city before you decide to move.

Can astrocartography tell you where to live?

Astrocartography maps your birth chart onto the globe. It shows where each planet was rising, setting, culminating or anchoring at the exact moment you were born. Those positions become lines across the world map, and living on or near a line brings that planet's energy into the foreground of your life.

Your map shows which themes a place is likely to amplify for you. With that, you can choose a location that matches what you want this chapter of your life to be about.

Each planet draws four lines on your map. The angle shows which area of your life the planet activates in that place.

  • AC, Ascendant: you, your body, how you show up, identity

  • MC, Midheaven: career, reputation, public life, visibility

  • DC, Descendant: partners, relationships, collaborations, clients

  • IC, Imum Coeli: home, family, roots, belonging

Example: Venus (love) on the DC (partners) can show a place where you meet someone special. Jupiter (luck) on the MC (career) can show a place where your career grows.

What each planet line brings

Start with what you want from the move. A city that is wonderful for a career boost may be a poor fit for settling down with a family, so your goal decides which lines matter most.

Every planet has a supportive and a challenging side.

☉ Sun
+ self-expression, confidence, recognition, purpose
− ego, pride, burnout, pressure to perform

☽ Moon
+ emotions, home, belonging, family
− moodiness, sensitivity, insecurity, attachment

☿ Mercury
+ communication, learning, ideas, networking
− overthinking, nervousness, restlessness, scattered focus

♀ Venus
+ love, beauty, pleasure, money
− indulgence, laziness, overspending, people-pleasing

♂ Mars
+ energy, drive, courage, action
− conflict, anger, impatience, accidents

♃ Jupiter
+ luck, growth, opportunities, abundance
− excess, overconfidence, overpromising, weight gain

♄ Saturn
+ structure, responsibility, discipline, mastery
− delays, loneliness, limitation, heaviness

♅ Uranus
+ change, freedom, surprises, innovation
− instability, disruption, detachment, sudden endings

♆ Neptune
+ dreams, intuition, spirituality, creativity
− confusion, illusion, escapism, disappointment

♇ Pluto
+ transformation, power, depth, rebirth
− control, crisis, obsession, power struggles

These are general descriptions of each planet’s energy. Your natal chart changes how a line behaves: a Venus that is well supported in your birth chart will feel very different from a Venus under pressure from Saturn. I'll go deeper into each planet in the dedicated articles on the Venus line, Jupiter line, Sun line and Moon line.

Why a free map is only the start

You can generate a free astrocartography map in a few minutes on sites like astro.com or astro-seek. It's a great first look, and I recommend doing it. A map on its own leaves out several things that decide how a place will actually feel:

  • Your natal chart. The same Jupiter line works differently for each person, depending on their birth chart and the condition of their Jupiter.

  • The relocation chart. When you move, your chart's houses shift. For a detailed analysis of a place, it's important to look at the relocation chart as well as the lines, because it shows how your story unfolds there.

  • Parans and Local Space. Parans are latitude crossings that can strongly change how you experience a place. With Local Space, we can also find your best directions.

  • Timing. Transits and progressions activate certain places at certain periods. A line can be quiet for years and then switch on.

  • Your real life. Work, language, visas, family and budget matter as much as the map.

This is why two people looking at the same free map often draw very different conclusions. In a reading, I use different layers depending on your goal.

FAQ

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Lines move with your birth time: a difference of 10 to 15 minutes can shift them by hundreds of kilometres. Check your birth certificate or ask your family.

What if there are no lines near my city?

That's very common, and it isn't a problem. The city then works mostly through your relocation chart, parans and Local Space. A place without strong lines can feel calm and neutral, which suits many people because it leaves room to simply be yourself.

Is it bad to live on a Saturn or Pluto line?

It depends on your chart and your goal. These lines can support discipline, depth and transformation, and they can also feel heavy in daily life. Short stays are usually easier than long-term moves.

Does astrocartography work for couples moving together?

Yes, and it's worth checking both maps. The same city can feel very different for each partner, so I offer a partner mini-session as an add-on.

Find the place that supports who you're becoming

The question "where should I live?" rarely has one simple answer. Your map gives you a direction, your natal chart explains how each place will work for you, and timing shows when to make the move.

If you're considering a move or simply curious where in the world you'd thrive, I'd love to look at your chart with you. In my astrocartography reading, we compare up to four or five places in detail and find your most supportive locations worldwide for your goal. Sessions are on Zoom in English, German, French or Russian.
